TT Premiere: Kevin Max Revisits Norman’s “Pardon Me”
You heard us talk about Larry Norman’s 1972 masterpiece, Only Visiting This Planet on the most recent episode of the True Tunes Podcast. It’s been our fastest-growing episode yet! And one friend and fan of Larry, dc Talk’s Kevin Max sent us a clip of a song from his upcoming tribute project REVISITING THIS PLANET to play on the show. Well, he’s done us one better now, offering the True Tunes family an early listen to a full song.
“Pardon Me” was always my favorite song on the album Only Visiting This Planet,” Max says. “It was the oddball inclusion that reminded me of latter-day Beatles. It was also my favorite to sing while recording our own version. The idea of this kind of romantic notion within a largely political and theological album always fascinated me. John Painter came to the table again with his naturalistic brass interpretation, somewhere between a New Orleans funeral procession and minimal beatnik soundtrack.”
Revisiting This Planet, which was fan-funded, will release widely on November 20th. We’ve heard the whole thing and it is quite a trip. Max, with the help of Painter, manages somehow to both honor the spirit and tone of the original songs and yet come up with a project that is still completely in line with his own, impressive, prog-meets-glam-meets-pop style. This is a fully authentic Kevin Max album, not a mere “covers” project. Check out Pardon Me now, and watch for the full album then. And THANKS KEVIN!
(Please spread this premiere and help get the word out about Kevin’s loving and brilliant homage to this fantastic album!)
